There is no clear-cut answer as to what your daily dose of CBD should be.
There are individual, genetic differences in how your endocannabinoid system works, which will influence the CBD dosage that will give you maximum benefits.
Usually, there is a minimum effective dose, which everyone needs to determine experimentally, but we will try to give you some good numbers to start with.
How Many CBD Gummies Should I Eat?
Part of the reason why gummies are such a good delivery method for CBD is the fixed and carefully-controlled dosage in each gummy. This takes care of any guesswork involved.
There is no deterioration of the CBD content of the gummies over time because the CBD is incorporated in the gelatinous structure of the gummy and protected from the air.
The number of gummies you should eat daily obviously depends on the strength of the gummies and your desired daily CBD dose. But typically, one or two gummies per day are sufficient to start giving you all the benefits CBD brings.
A good starting point if you’re new is around 25mg of CBD per day. Whether you want to split that dose into two, 10mg gummies, or just take it at once as a 20mg gummy is up to you.
We’ll talk a bit more about dose-splitting in a minute. It’s a good idea to stick to this moderate dose for up to a week and gauge how you feel.
From there, a higher dose may further increase the relaxation and pain-relief which CBD brings, but the benefits may also plateau.
Factors that might affect your individual dosage
GENETICS: As we already mentioned, the genetics involved in your endocannabinoid (or EC) system will play a huge part in selecting the best dosage. The more sub-optimally your internal endocannabinoid system functions, the higher a dose you will benefit the most from.
However, it has been suggested that only about 20% of the population has an optimally-functioning EC system, which means it’s very likely that CBD will help you and very unlikely that it won’t.
BODY WEIGHT: Obviously, the heavier you are, the higher dosage you’ll need to achieve the same CBD concentration in your blood. Body fat also plays a role, especially when you consider that CBD is fat-soluble.
Higher body weight may also slow down the initial accumulation of CBD and may extend the period of time you need to take it for it to start exerting its maximum benefits.
TOLERANCE: The claim that the longer you take CBD, the higher of a tolerance you build, and the more you need to increase your dose, might be false. At least one study suggests that CBD isn’t a compound that leads to tolerance-building. In fact, the opposite may be the case.
It’s not clear whether the accumulation effect, discussed later in this article, is caused by the CBD actually accumulating in your body, or if there is some sort of a ‘reverse-tolerance’ effect at play.
The total daily dose of CBD is not the only thing that matters. You may also want to experiment with the timing of your CBD gummies – depending on your genetic makeup, CBD may stimulate or, relax you, or even both at the same time.
The effect may also differ based on the time of day and you may find that the exact same dose of CBD makes you sleepy at night, but stimulated in the morning.
In that case, it may be an excellent idea to choose a gummy dosage, suitable for taking two gummies daily – one in the mornings, and one before bed. Usually, 10mg gummies are well suited for that purpose.
Accumulative Effect vs Acute Effect
Although CBD has acute, instant effects like relaxation, pain relief, and increased focus, it also has longer time-frame benefits as well. It’s unclear whether this is due to its accumulating in your system, or because of a reverse tolerance phenomenon.
It’s important to take CBD gummies for at least a week before accurately gauging the benefits they’re bringing you.
Typically, the acute effect of CBD lasts 5 to 12 hours, depending on many factors. But because of the accumulative effect, you may be pleased to discover that the next day, the administration of the same dose might give you even more benefits.
This upward trend may continue for many days, as the CBD builds up in your system and starts positively affecting your internal endocannabinoid system.
