There are many prescription medications on the market today that help to treat anxiety in people. The thing is, many of these medicines can have side effects that people don’t like. Prescriptions like Zoloft, Prozac, Celexa, and others can give relief from anxiety and depression as well as a host of other mental and emotional disorders. Some of the side effects can include dizziness, fatigue, blurred vision, headaches, memory loss, and more. It is no wonder so many anxiety sufferers are trying CBD oil as an alternative to pharmaceutical options for treatment.
What Are The Symptoms Of Anxiety?
There are varying degrees of anxiety. Mild anxiety can usually be controlled fairly easily, while moderate to severe anxiety can be a horrible condition to live with it. With severe anxiety, you may suffer panic attacks that can make you feel like you are literally about to die. During a bad panic attack, you can hyperventilate and it can be very scary for the one experiencing it.
For most people, the most common symptoms of an anxiety issue can include excessive worry that you can’t control, fatigue, sleeplessness, and a feeling of restlessness. Other signs are loss of concentration, irritability, agitation, trembling, hot flashes, and sweating. Some of the more severe symptoms that can indicate a serious anxiety issue and/or panic attack are chest pains, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, thoughts of impending doom, and terror.
Most people will have anxiety at some point in their life, but it can be limited to a stressful occasion like having to give a speech in public, getting married, or having a baby. These are normal things that can cause a person to be anxious or stressed. Once the event or problem is over, the anxiety will usually go away and life returns to normal.
However, for those that get anxious over any little thing, it is a different matter. They can wake up with anxiety in the morning and go to bed with it at night either every day or most days. When this is occurring, then treatment of some kind is usually necessary if they want to enjoy life as much as possible.
What Is CBD?
Cannabidiol is a chemical compound found in the flower of the cannabis plant. Cannabis is just another name for marijuana, or its cousin, the hemp plant. CBD stands for cannabidiol. Cannabidiol is thought to be helpful with many medical conditions because of the way it interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system.
The endocannabinoid system’s job is to maintain homeostasis in the body. It works to retain a level of stability related to processes that affect things like mood, immune function, sleep, stress, reproduction, appetite, and many more. This system works by using endocannabinoids such as CBD by binding to certain receptors throughout the body, specifically CB1 receptors and CB2 receptors. When this happens, it tells the nervous system to take the actions necessary to create a more stable level of wellness and health.
Studies On CBD And Anxiety
Many studies in recent years have found that one of the most promising health effects CBD can help with is anxiety. In the Journal of Psychopharmacology, a study was published that has subjected 40 people to a public speaking simulation. As was stated above, public speaking can be very stressful for most people. Every person in the study was given one medicine. Some received CBD, some received Valium (diazepam), or ipsapirone which is an anti-depressant/ anti-anxiety medication.
All of the subjects were evaluated by using the Visual Analogue Mood Scale and State-trait Anxiety Inventory. According to this measurement, the researchers concluded that CBD decreased anxiety levels which were in evidence after the public speaking simulation. They found that the chemical compound offers anti-anxiety effects when situations are stressful.
Another research published in Current Opinion in Psychology noted that when people with PTSD were given CBD, they also showed positive effects relating to modulated fear and insomnia. It is thought by many researchers that CBD can be effective in treating depression disorder as well as anxiety-related problems.
Although exactly how CBD is thought to works to inhibit anxiety and depression is not totally clear to researchers, they speculate that it could be because of the way it affects the paralimbic and the limbic areas of the brain. It is likely many more studies need to be done in so that the impact CBD has on mental and physical health can be completely understood and confirmed completely.
Is CBD The Right Assistant For Your Anxiety?
There are several factors you will need to consider if you decide to try CBD as a treatment for your anxiety condition. If you only have occasional anxiety that relates to the everyday issues that can cause anyone infrequent anxiety, then it might be worth trying just to see if it provides the relief you need from time to time.
However, if you have a serious anxiety disorder and are currently taking prescription medication prescribed by your doctor, then that is a different matter. You should never stop taking your medication, add a natural product like CBD, or switch to a natural product like CBD before you discuss it with your doctor.
Stopping some medications abruptly such as anti-depressants and anti-anxiety treatments can be harmful. It appears that CBD has virtually no side-effects for most people and that is only one reason it has become so popular among those that suffer from anxiety and other mental and physical issues as well.
