Does CBD Oil Help Kidney Disease

Most people may not know that kidney disease is the ninth leading cause of death in the United States. Research conducted by the American Kidney Fund found that approximately 10% of the American population may suffer from chronic kidney disease. Some types of kidney disease can be treated, but there is no cure for chronic kidney disease. If you are diagnosed with kidney disease, it’s more important than ever to take care of yourself. This means caring for your entire body, both physically and mentally.

There has been some research that shows cannabis will not cause damage to the kidneys. This research means cannabis may be anĀ  alternative to opioids and anti-inflammatory drugs for kidney disease patients. There is no evidence that cannabis can cure kidney disease, but could be a safer compound to relieve some kidney disease symptoms. Cannabidiol (CBD) can be derived from marijuana and hemp plants. CBD from hemp has less tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which can make you high. CBD derived from marijuana contains more THC, which can induce intoxication.

When diagnosed with kidney disease, you must see your doctor often and follow their guidance. Take your medications as prescribed and on time. A diet specialist can make recommendations on what you should eat and how much. Many of those with kidney disease wonder if natural supplements could help their condition. Of late, some people suffering from kidney disorders wonder if using Cannabidiol Oil (CBD) products could be helpful for them.

What Can Cause Kidney Disease?

When compared to other vital organs in the body, the kidneys may be considered small in size. However, that does not mean their role is not significant. The kidneys filter excess fluids and waste from the blood and help maintain overall health. Kidney disease can often be prevented.

Many things cause kidney disease. High blood pressure and diabetes are leading contributors to kidney disease. Another cause of kidney disease is glomerulonephritis. This disease damages the glomeruli, the kidney’s filtering units. Some instances of this condition may be inherited, such as polycystic kidney disease. Other contributors to kidney disease are infections or kidney stones.

Some over-the-counter pain relievers have been linked to kidney issues when over-used. They are acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, and even aspirin. These drugs do not pose much danger for those that take them as prescribed. However, when a person has conditions that make them take more than the prescribed dosage over long periods, it can cause an increased risk of kidney issues.

Symptoms Of Kidney Disease

It is recommended that everyone see their doctor for a routine physical examination each year. Many people don’t follow that guideline. We are inclined to wait until we begin to have symptoms that aren’t quite right before scheduling an appointment. When you notice a change in normal kidney function, it’s time to see your doctor.

According to the Mayo Clinic, kidney disease signs are decreased mental sharpness, muscle twitches, cramps, feet, and ankle swelling How much you urinate is an indicator of kidney problems. Other symptoms can include persistent itching, shortness of breath, chest pain, and high blood pressure.

Even though some of these symptoms may be indicators of other physical ailments, they may be related to compromised kidney function. When you have many symptoms at once, it could be an indication of kidney issues. Seeing your doctor right away is always the best option.

Treatments For Kidney Disease

What type of medications and treatment your doctor recommends depends on what kind of kidney issues you have. Removing kidney stones is much easier today than in the past. Kidney infections are treated with antibiotics and usually go away in a few days. However, chronic kidney disease is a much more serious matter.

When you have been diagnosed with kidney disease, it usually gets worse over time. Since many times kidney disease begins because of high blood pressure or diabetes, your doctor will treat these conditions with appropriate medications. Once your kidney disease has progressed to end-stage renal disease (ESRD), one treatment option is dialysis. This is a time-consuming procedure. The number of times a week you take dialysis treatments depends on the severity of your kidney function. Dialysis removes waste, salt, and extra water.

If you have been on dialysis and the treatments stop working well, the last resort is a kidney transplant. This can be a long journey for some people because of the limited number of kidney donors. The organ has to be a match for you if you are lucky enough to have a volunteer donor. Even if you get a kidney transplant, you will need to take medication for the rest of your life to prevent your body from rejecting the kidney.

Can Kidney Disease Be Prevented?

Most of us know that leading a healthy lifestyle can help prevent many conditions and diseases from ever starting. The same goes for developing kidney disease. While there is no guarantee you can’t still get kidney disease, the healthier you are, it may reduce the risk.

Reducing the risk of kidney disease means eating a healthy diet and reducing salt. Avoid alcohol and don’t smoke. Get adequate exercise and maintain a healthy weight. Controlling your blood pressure and blood sugar are things your doctor can help you with. Make sure you always drink plenty of water and avoid over-the-counter medications that can contribute to kidney problems or cause them.

Another contributor to kidney disease is stress. Stress can lead to sleep disorders, anxiety, and high blood pressure. Learning to cope with stress and control it can go along way in helping to prevent physical and mental conditions it can cause.

How Could CBD Help Kidney Disease

First of all, CBD products will not cure your kidney disease. However, there are many studies showing promise in CBD to treat many things. Most of these studies are inconclusive as of yet, but research continues. CBD has been shown to help with seizures related to some types of rare epileptic conditions. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the CBD-based drug Epidiolex for some epilepsy seizures.

Some studies have shown that CBD can help reduce inflammation and may help with pain issues. This is why some researchers think it could be of benefit to kidney disease patients. If CBD can help reduce inflammation, it could mean less pain as well.

Many people that use CBD say it helps them stay calm and relaxed. Being calm and relaxed may lead to a reduction in stress and promote better sleep. All of these things are important if you have kidney disease. Even though CBD will not cure or treat your kidney disease, using CBD may help you with other physical and mental issues. The FDA does not allow medical claims to be made on CBD product labels. This is because most studies are yet inconclusive.

When you have any serious medical condition such as kidney disease, see your doctor before stopping any prescribed medication. Don’t add any new treatment, even if it is a natural supplement like CBD, before checking with your doctor.
