Does CBD Help With Restless Leg Syndrome

Many things can cause sleepless nights, but restless leg syndrome (RLS) is one of the most annoying conditions. It can cause loss of sleep regularly for some people. If you can imagine a tingly, crawling, and sometimes painful sensation running up and down your legs, and your not sure why it’s probably restless legs.

Restless leg syndrome usually happens in the early evening while sitting down or at night when you try to fall asleep. It makes you feel like you must move your legs up and down. You may even have to get out of bed and walk around to get the sensation to stop. Even if you manage to fall asleep restless leg can wake you up again.

It is thought that 1 of every 10 Americans deals with RLS almost every day. Some medications may help control the condition, but there is no official cure yet. There is some thought that Cannabidiol (CBD might help with RLS symptoms.

What Causes Restless Leg Syndrome?

Restless Leg is also known as Willis- Ekbom disease. RLS causes an uncontrollable urge to move your legs. Moving the legs can bring temporary relief to the uncomfortable sensations. It can begin at any age and may worsen as you get older. RLS seems to be more common in women than in men.

Sometimes, there is no known cause for RLS. Some researchers think the condition may be caused by an imbalance of the chemical dopamine in the brain. Dopamine sends messages that help control muscle movement.

Some people are more prone to experience RLS if it runs in their families, which means it can be hereditary. This is more possible when the condition begins before the age of 40. Some research has identified sites on chromosomes where genes for RLS may be present.

Pregnant women may get RLS for the first time due to hormonal changes, especially in the last trimester. The symptoms may disappear after the pregnancy is over.

RLS does not necessarily mean a more serious underlying condition. However, it may accompany other conditions such as peripheral neuropathy. This is damage in the nerves of the hands and feet and may be caused by alcoholism or diabetes. Using caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco can aggravate symptoms of RLS. Limiting these substances may help reduce RLS symptoms.

Iron deficiency is thought to be a possible cause of RLS. An iron deficiency can cause or make RLS worse even if you don’t have anemia. A history of stomach or bowel bleeding, heavy menstrual cycles, or donating blood too often might cause an iron deficiency and lead to RLS.

Kidney failure can also cause an iron deficiency with anemia. If kidneys do not function correctly, it can cause a decrease in iron stores in the blood. This iron change and others may worsen or even cause RLS.

Spinal cords problems can increase the risk of developing RLS. Spinal cord lesions resulting from damage or injury have already been linked to RLS. Anesthesia in the spinal cord also increases the risk of RLS.

Treatment For Restless Leg Syndrome

Although there is no cure for RLS, there are treatments that may help to relieve it. RLS may respond well to pharmacologic therapy. Some RLS treatments have been studied in controlled, randomized trials. Dopaminergic agents, opioids, alpha-2-delta calcium, and benzodiazepines were the drugs studied.

Sometimes, avoiding certain medications may help prevent bouts of RLS. The antihistamine diphenhydramine (Benadryl), antinausea medications, and prochlorperazine (Compro) could make RLS worse. The list of drugs that may aggravate RLS is long, so speak with your doctor when you have RLS about what medications you need to avoid.

It is also thought that some exercise may help alleviate RLS. Doing things like walking, swimming, and cycling could relieve the symptoms. This does not mean that overdoing it is a good thing because that might make the condition worse.

Can CBD Play A Role In Treating Restless Leg Syndrome?

Even when you try to avoid medications and other substances that may trigger RLS, you may still have it anyway. Sometimes exercise does not prevent it. Cannabidiol (CBD) is derived from the marijuana and hemp plant. CBD derived from hemp does not contain enough tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) to cause intoxicating effects. CBD derived from marijuana can cause intoxication because the THC content is more.

There have been numerous studies with CBD to determine what conditions it could be helpful to treat. It is known to help reduce or eliminate seizures in some rare forms of epilepsy. The Food and Drug Administration has approved a CBD-based drug called Epidiolex to treat these seizures.

Other uses for CBD that have been studied are for pain, inflammation, anxiety, sleep disorders, appetite, and more. CBD is thought to promote a calming and relaxing feeling that can make you sleepy. When you are more relaxed and calm, it can help you sleep better. It is thought this calming effect could help those that suffer from Restless Leg Syndrome. It is also believed CBD may help reduce or eliminate the pain and that horrible crawling, tingling sensation that comes with RLS.

Many people that use CBD to treat their RLS think it is a better, more natural choice than prescription medications. If you deal with RLS often, speak with your doctor to determine if trying CBD might be a treatment choice you. Besides possibly helping with your RLS,CBD it may help treat other conditions you may have as well. You can purchase CBD from hemp in many stores and online. It is legal in every US state.
