Does CBD Help With Gout Pain?

If you are someone that suffers from gout, then you already know how painful it can be. The swelling, tenderness, and inflammation can be almost crippling depending on where it is located. Gout in the toes, feet, and knees is very common, but it can show up in other areas of the body too. It can also affect elbows, wrists, and fingers. Wherever it shows up, it’s going to hurt.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a very painful form of inflammatory arthritis. It is caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals that can form in joints. These uric acid crystals can also deposit in other tissues in the body. The kidney is a good example of this. It can lead to kidney stones. Gout is most common in men over 45, but it can happen at any age to anyone. Family history, high blood pressure, kidney disease, or diabetes can increase the risk of getting gout.

When someone is experiencing an attack of gout, they can get sudden and severe pain. It can cause warmth, redness, and swelling in one or more joints at a time. Gout can often begin in a big toe, but it can spread to other joints and possibly cause permanent damage.

Attacks of gout can happen quickly and may last for several days. When someone has had an initial attack, many people will have another flare-up within a year, and more than 3 out of 4 will have another attack within 2 years.

What Trigger Attacks Of Gout?

When your body breaks down purines, it produces uric acid. Purines are substances that are found naturally in the body. Purines can also be found in certain foods. Uric acid will normally dissolve in the blood and then pass through the kidneys and goes out in the urine.

However, sometimes your body can produce too much uric acid or the kidneys excrete too little uric acid. If this happens, the uric acid can build up and forms sharp, needle-like urate crystals in a joint or in surrounding tissue. That can cause swelling, inflammation, and pain.

What Foods Cause Gout?

Probably one of the most famous accounts of gout in history is that of Henry the 8th of England. Many portraits of King Henry depict him eating meat and drinking alcohol. He suffered terrible gout in his later years. In the past few decades, the numbers of people suffer from attacks of gout has substantially increased.

It has been said for decades that the primary cause of gout is meat consumption, but this has recently been proven to be not true. Carbohydrates are now considered to be one of the largest, if not the largest, contributors to gout outbreaks.

Here are some facts about gout, purines, and sugar:

Only around 1/3 of uric acid in your body is derived from your diet

Vegetables that have a lot of purines, like spinach, aren’t associated with gout

Gout is closely associated with diseases such as type 2 diabetes

Alcohol is processed by the liver the same basic way fructose is, which leads to gout attacks

If you are prone to gout outbreaks, you should see your doctor and he or she will likely give you a diet plan to help you avoid have attacks. There is evidence that suggests that if cutting meat, particularly red meat, out of your diet doesn’t work, cutting your carbohydrate consumption down will.

Medical Treatments for Gout

One of the best treatments for gout is a diet that doesn’t contribute to the problem, however, once it shows up, you want to rid yourself of it as quickly as possible. When you see your doctor for a gout flare-up, they may prescribe any number of medications that can reduce inflammation and help with the pain.

These may include Glucocorticosteroids (cortisone), Colchicine, or Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). Over the counter NSAIDs such as Advil, Aleve, and Motrin can be effective to treat mild to moderate cases without a prescription. Allopurinol is often prescribed to help lower uric acid which leads to gout in the first place.

The best way to get rid of gout once you have it is to reduce uric acid and reduce the inflammation. For people that suffer from gout frequently, many have turned to CBD oil as a way to help relieve the inflammation and pain.

Can CBD Help With Gout Pain?

There have been numerous studies that have shown the potential for CBD oil and other CBD products to help reduce inflammation in many conditions. It is also said to be a good pain reliever. CBD (cannabidiol) is a cannabinoid that is derived from cannabis. You can purchase CBD isolate, which means the product only contains cannabidiol and very few other cannabinoids from cannabis or you can choose broad-spectrum or full-spectrum CBD.

Full-spectrum CBD will contain all or almost all of the cannabinoids from the cannabis plant. Broad-spectrum contains fewer cannabinoids than full-spectrum, but more than typical CBD isolate.

CBD Dosage For Gout Pain

As with any remedy you use to treat a medical condition, getting the dosage correct is essential. Once you have chosen to try CBD to treat gout, you may not know how much to take and how often. Some experts suggest starting with 20-25mg per day. Broken down that means using a ratio of 1 to 6mg for every 10 lbs of body weight. The recommended dosage may also be on the label of your CBD product.

If you are skeptical about trying CBD, you might wish to consult with your doctor first. Doctors that are more open-minded about the use of cannabis to treat medical conditions may more readily recommend CBD products.

CBD Options For Gout

It’s important to note that besides CBD oil, other CBD products include gummies, creams, and pressed pills. These oil alternatives can provide the same results. Some people choose to vape CBD oil instead of ingesting it by mouth and others choose a form other than oil.

CBD cream is a common choice over oil to use for gout and other arthritic conditions because it can be applied directly to the inflamed area and is said to provide localized relief. Some studies have shown that in cases of arthritis CBD topical creams may be more effective when targeting specific areas.. It can be applied when needed to clean dry skin. It should be massaged into the skin so it is absorbed quickly and thoroughly.
